Holes
Holes By Louis sachar winner of the 1999 Newbery Medal, The award is given to the author of "the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.
Stanley Yelnats is sent to camp green lake in order to serve a sentence of hard labor for a crime he didn't commit. A pair of stolen shoes were thrown on him and he was charged with the crime. At camp green lake, the boys there have to dig a hole five feet deep and five feet wide before they can head in for the day. Stanley's family blames their bad luck on a family curse put on the great great grandfather for not carrying a gypsy up a mountain in return for a pig. Kate Barlow a school teacher at camp green lake over a hundred years before Stanley got there went on a revenge spree of killing after some people burned her school down and killed her lover. One of he heists was taking the treasure of Stanley's great great grandfather and bring it. During his time at camp green lake, Stanley meets another boy named Zero. They agree on a deal, Zero would help Stanley dig his holes if Stanley taught him how to read and write. Zero decides to run away from camp one day followed by Stanley, exhausted from lack of water, Stanley carries Zero up a mountain to a stream of water and onions. Zero just happens to be a direct descendant of the gypsy who cursed Stanley's family so when Stanley carried up zero, it broke the family curse. when they get back to the camp, they dig up the treasure that kissing Kate Barlow buried, the treasure that the warden of camp green lake has been searching for all these years. The warden claims that the treasure is hers, but the treasure chest has Stanley Yelnats writing on it making Stanley's to keep. Stanley's lawyer was able to come clear hi of his crime and she takes both Stanley and Zero (Hector) with her. This mystery is a great book, one of my favorites in fact from an early age. The suspense and the different characters have the reader rooting for Stanley and Zero the entire time. This is a great book and I highly recommend it for grades three through five.
